Fraud & Scam Advice

Unfortunately, as in all walks of life, there are a small minority of thieves, conmen and tricksters who will try any means to relieve you of your cash or vehicle unfairly. Being forewarned is being fore-armed, so if you want to minimise the risk of falling foul to one of their methods, read the following advice carefully.

Latest Scam:

The team at Mouse Move™ would like everyone who uses this website to read the following information about the latest SCAMMING  EMAILS .

The scam goes as follows:

  • Firstly they contact you to say they or their client would like to buy your vehicle
  • They almost always offer £250 under the asking price and ask for pictures of the craft or vehicle
  • The next email tells you that their client will send you a cheque for £2000-£4000 over the agreed price and asks you to refund the difference to them, their lawyer or agent.
  • They will ask you for your name, your postal address and telephone contact details, sometimes your bank account details.
  • Their mail to you is written in very bad English
  • They will claim to be overseas and to have a contact in England , they may even provide you with an English address
  • They almost always have a 'yahoo' email address

Here's an example of the first email they may send you:

"Grettings to you ,Caralina is my Names.I will like to purchase your Quicksilver 460 / 40hp cost £8.000. I am intresting  and i will like to make offer of £7,750 so let me know what you think about this price and also if you have any piccs available send it to me because i will like the piccs it.I will be looking forward for to your reply. Regards.."

The cheque or bank draft they send you is always stolen or a forgery and will never clear through your bank account, the names and addresses they will supply you with are bogus. They will persistently chase you to refund them the difference, of course your cheque will clear, but their's will not. Do not send them a cheque!

if you receive one of these Scam Emails we advise you report it to the police, they may not be able to help you as the crime is being committed internationally. They may also take the viewpoint that as no money has actually been taken fraud has not yet been committed, however, intent to defraud is a crime. The Met Police Office have published useful information about the CASHBACK FRAUD on the following web page   http://cms.met.police.uk/news/appeals/fraud/criminal_cashback_fraud

We recommend that you do not give out your name and address by email unless you are certain that they are a legitimate buyer, if you are in any doubt please contact admin@mouse-move.com or call 01226 370 072 (office hours). NEVER GIVE BANK ACCOUNT OR CREDIT CARD DETAILS BY EMAIL.

Always remember to exercise caution during the sale of any type of vehicle, tell everyone you know about the scam and let us know if you are contacted by a scammer at the following address customercare@mouse-move.com and help us to stop these conmen and women .

If you have any further questions or if there is anything else we can help you with please don't hesitate to contact us.

Below we have listed a few guidlines for you.

Don't...

  • buy any vehicle that doesn't have registration documents or certificates, even if the seller says they have been sent to the DVLA for changes
  • let a buyer take your car for a test drive without you accompanying him/her
  • leave a potential buyer alone with the keys in the ignition
  • pay cash for a vehicle
  • hand over the keys until payment has been cleared
  • arrange for the seller to bring the car to your home address
  • pay over the odds, check Glass's Motoring Guide to find your vehicle's valuation

Do...

  • make sure you always carry out a vehicle history check before handing over any money
  • check that the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (usually located on a plate under the bonnet) matches that on the registration documents.
  • check for signs of forced entry or changed locks
  • consider taking a qualified mechanic along with you to look at the car
  • make a note of the buyer's contact details and address
  • view the car at the address stated on the registration documents, preferably in daylight
  • check the mileage with the previous mileage recorded on the registration documents
  • contact Consumer Direct if you think you've been ripped off

Remember... if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is, so walk away.
